As Bayern Munich floundered during the 2023/24 season, rumors emerged that the team would be turned over and that a roster overhaul was on its way to happening.
Well, here we are, just mere hours before the transfer window ends and here is Bayern Munich’s activity:
Incoming
- Michael Olise, Crystal Palace (€53 million)
- João Palhinha, Fulham FC (€51 million)
- Hiroki Ito, VfB Stuttgart (€23.5 million)
- Eric Dier, Tottenham Hotspur (free)
Outgoing
- Matthijs de Ligt, Manchester United (€45 million)
- Noussair Mazraoui, Manchester United (€15 million)
- Malik Tillman, PSV Eindhoven (€12 million)
Loans
- Frans Krätzig, VfB Stuttgart (€500K)
- Bryan Zaragoza, Osasuna (€250K)
- Armindo Sieb, Mainz 05 (undisclosed)
- Paul Wanner, Heidenheim (undisclosed)
- Maurice Krattenmacher, SSV Ulm 1846 (undisclosed)
- Gibson Nana Adu, Unterhaching (undisclosed)
- Lovro Zvonarek, Sturm Graz (undisclosed)
Not exactly the massive overhaul that was rumored, eh? There were some key additions and some big losses, but if you are hoping for anything else to happen, you might be disappointed based on the news from Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg:
At FC Bayern, only Gabriel Vidovic is scheduled to leave on loan to Mainz 05 on deadline day. Leon Goretzka will stay 100 percent – just confirmed again.
Kingsley Coman could still move to Saudi Arabia by September 2nd. FCB and Al-Hilal have been in agreement for several days. But the Frenchman is still hesitating. A year ago he received a top offer from the Saudi Pro League, which he turned down for sporting and family reasons.
If no top option in Europe emerges by this evening, the tendency is for Coman (contract until 2027) to stay.
A deal for Coman could still happen, but is doubtful. The Frenchman would have to adjust his mindset and leave European competition — which could be a longshot at this stage of his career.
How happy are with you the results?

Some good incoming transfers, but selling De Ligt and Mazraoui was a massive gaffe.

Bayern Munich’s season in fully underway.
The summer transfer window is almost over, the DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga both kicked off, and now the Champions League draw has taken place. When you factor in that the German national team also made its call-ups, there is plenty to talk about. So, let’s get to it. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show:
- INNN and Chuck break down Bayern Munich’s Champions League draw. Do we like the format? What do we think about the match-ups? PSG and FC Barcelona — again? Oh, the humanity — and subplots!
- Julian Nagelsmann made his latest call-ups to the German national team? Who won, who lost? Why so few Bayern Munich players?
- Bayern Munich is in the final few days of the summer transfer window — what will happen with Kingsley Coman and Jonathan Tah? Should Bayern Munich take a flier on Mats Hummels?
Song of the Week: “Go with the Flow” by Queens of the Stone Age
Released in 2003, it does not feel like this song is over 20 years old!
“Go with the Flow” still is a fresh sound, which seems odd to say after that amount of time, but the band was really a bastard son of grunge (that’s a compliment) and found a great spot in between some of the other popular genres of the period. Anyway, enjoy this tune on a fine Friday:
Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show: Bayern Munich vs. SC Freiburg
Bayern Munich is set to host SC Freiburg in its first home game of the Bundesliga season.
The Bavarians are coming off of a nerve-wracking 3-2 win over Wolfsburg, in a match that was probably a lot closer than it needed to be. Matchday 2 should present a less challenging obstacle in SC Freiburg, who is a club in transition.
As we know, though, what should happen and what will happen often do not align. Die Breisgau-Brasilianer stifled VfB Stuttgart last weekend, can it do the same to Bayern Munich?
We’ll see. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show:
- Where do things stand after Matchday 1?
- What to watch for with SC Freiburg.
- A look at Bayern Munich’s injury situation.
- A guess at Bayern Munich’s starting XI.
- A prediction on the match.
De Ligt not burning bridges
Matthijs de Ligt might be suiting up for Manchester United these days, but he still has great things to say about Bayern Munich.
“Bayern in Germany is really big, and also in Europe, you always feel there’s a lot of respect for the club – the way the board is running the club. So yeah, it’s also an amazing, really big institution,” De Ligt told Sky Sport.
It sure would be nice to have the Dutchman on the backline wouldn’t it?
Predictions
SC Freiburg should — theoretically — be a team in transition. However, a veteran-laden roster seems reinvigorated under new coach Julian Schuster and could be a tough match for a Bayern Munich squad still looking to get its bearings under Vincent Kompany.
At home, however, the Bavarians should be motivated to perform well in front of their fans. With talent and depth to burn, Bayern Munich should be able to eventually wear down an experienced Freiburg backline and put enough distance between itself and Freiburg’s iffy attacking group.
It should be a better effort from the Bayern Munich backline as well, which should give Manuel Neuer a nice respite from dealing with some of the nonsense that he saw from his vantage point last week.
Prediction: Bayern Munich 3-0 SC Freiburg
Other Bundesliga predictions:
- Union Berlin 2-1 St. Pauli
- VfL Bochum 2-2 Borussia Mönchengladbach
- Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 Hoffenheim
- Holstein Kiel 1-1 VfL Wolfsburg
- VfB Stuttgart 3-1 Mainz 05
- Werder Bremen 0-3 Borussia Dortmund
- Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 RB Leipzig
- Heidenheim 1-2 FC Augsburg
