Jadon Sancho has finally joined Chelsea in one of deadline day’s biggest – and latest – transfers.
The forward has swapped Manchester United for Stamford Bridge on a season-long loan deal with the obligation to make the switch permanent for £25million – a deal that was announced almost 24 hours after the window closed.
Juventus had been the most likely side to offer Sancho an escape route from his Old Trafford nightmare, however it’s Chelsea who have managed to get a deal over the line.
Sancho will now be hoping to reignite his career following a frustrating three years with the Red Devils.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Sancho said: “I’m really excited to be here. London is where I grew up and I’m happy to be back.
“The manager spoke to me about the project and, for a young player, it’s exciting. Hopefully I can bring goals and assists to the Bridge.”
He could make his Blues debut against Bournemouth after the international break.
Man United confirmed the news in a short statement of their own, saying: “Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho has joined Chelsea on loan for the remainder of the season.
“The 24-year-old England international sealed his move late on transfer deadline day, with the announcement coming on Saturday evening.
“Sancho returned to United earlier this summer following a half-season loan spell at former club Borussia Dortmund in Germany.
“He will now link up with Enzo Maresca’s Blues squad at Stamford Bridge.
“We wish Jadon good luck for the campaign to come.”
The 24-year-old joined United from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021 for a fee of £73m, but has struggled to live up to expectations.
After falling out with Erik ten Hag, Sancho rejoined Dortmund in January this year, scoring three goals to help the German side on their way to the Champions League final.
Sancho returned to United this summer with Ten Hag stating that the winger would be part of his plans once again.
He said: “We’ve drawn the line.
“Manchester United need good players and Jadon is a good player. We have drawn that line and we move on.”
Sancho featured in the Community Shield defeat against Manchester City – where he missed his penalty in the shootout.
But he has since failed to make another appearance for United, leading to talk of an exit before the window closed.
In 83 appearances for the Red Devils, Sancho scored 12 goals and offered six assists with his last strike coming in May 2023.
