Playing at Old Trafford used to be a nightmare for Liverpool, now they can’t wait to get out there.
The Reds turned the Theatre of Dreams into the Theatre of Nightmares for the Red Devils once more last time out, winning 3-0 in Arne Slot’s third game in charge.
Mohamed Salah made it ten goals at Old Trafford since 2021, the fifth-most of any player, including Man United players, while Luis Diaz netted a double.
It marked a stark turnaround for Liverpool who went eight games without a win at their rivals home from 2014 to 2021.
But pre-match footage from the tunnel shows it may have already been obvious what was about to happen.
Even with the loss of iconic manager Jurgen Klopp during the summer, Liverpool’s players emerged from the Old Trafford tunnel with their shoulders back, heads high and the kind of determined looks that Man United legend Roy Keane became famous for.
Yet one player summed up the change in Liverpool’s mood before playing at Old Trafford more than any other – Dominik Szoboszlai.
With club media following the players out, a symphony of boos rained down on the away side.
Yet as the noise increased, Szoboszlai could be heard shouting: “Yeah! I love it!” before running out onto the turf.
The Hungarian, who joined last summer from Leipzig for £60million clearly knew exactly what his task was as he went on to play his part in comprehensively winning the game’s midfield battle.
He first made way for Diaz’s opener, and later assisted Salah’s goal that virtually ended the match, and given he and his teammate’s mood pre-match, we probably shouldn’t be surprised.
The result means Liverpool are second in the Premier League with a maximum nine points from their opening three games, behind reigning champions Manchester City on goals scored.
As for Man United, they are 14th in the table with three points having lost two of their opening three matches.
