In the summer of 2023, Bayern Munich broke the bank to acquire Harry Kane and Min-jae Kim for a combined €145M. During the 2024 summer transfer window, Bayern spent €104M to acquire Michael Olise and João Palhinha.
Next summer, Bayern has already narrowed their sights on Bayer Leverkusen and German international midfielder Florian Wirtz. Wirtz’s contract doesn’t expire until 2027, which means that Bayern will have to break the club transfer record (Harry Kane, €95M) to acquire Wirtz. Here is the latest new according to Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia):
Bayern want to pair Jamal Musiala with Florian Wirtz next season and will make a move for the latter in the summer. Real Madrid and Manchester City are also interested. Arsenal have also joined the race for Wirtz. They had already scouted him during his youth days in Köln. When he leaves Leverkusen, Wirtz wants to join a team with a realistic chance of winning the Champions League and that also offers him the perspective of winning the Ballon d’Or. Bayer Leverkusen’s asking price is €150m.
Out of the four teams in question, Real Madrid is the only team that realistically meets the criteria. Bayern and Manchester City have both won the sextuple this decade but failed to produce a Ballon d’Or winner. Arsenal FC hasn’t even won the Premier League in 20 years, let alone a Champions League.
There is a bigger lingering question: Is Wirtz even worth the money for Bayern? Jamal Musiala already fills the number ten role at a world class level. Wouldn’t it be more worthwhile to spend that money on an elite goalkeeper (~€40M), speedy winger (~€50M), and lockdown defender (~€60M)?
