Bayern Munich has now finished a run of seven games in 22 days, in which the squad was consistently forced to go through english week after english week after english week. The start was brutal, with the 4-1 loss to FC Barcelona a major blot on the record, but the overall record of six wins in seven is not bad.
Head coach Vincent Kompany was all too happy to point out how difficult the past weeks have been and gave some context on the struggles the tough schedule has caused:
“I’m really happy with how the team got through this period of games. We had a 15-minute delay on Wednesday and Hamburg is about the furthest place [away from Munich] in Germany and then we kick off at 3:00 again on Saturday. Okay. We just got on with it,” Kompany stated, via @iMiaSanMia. “We performed really well in terms of [the circumstances].”
Notably, the other Champions League contenders in the Bundesliga have not fared as well as Bayern has: “You put this into context with the results of Leverkusen in Bochum and Dortmund in Mainz, and you appreciate how valuable this win was.”
With lawn ball sports Leipzig also dropping points the same matchday, Bayern’s victory over attrition and St Pauli has seen the club move five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table. If the match was not as tasty as some may have hoped, the larger context of the match may yet satisfy Bayern fans.
