Tottenham produced an underwhelming display in the 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town
Tottenham Hotspur’s highly inconsistent campaign continued on Sunday when newly promoted Ipswich Town shocked them 2-1 in north London.
Ange Postecoglou’s side had the opportunity to go above bitter rivals Arsenal—before they faced Chelsea—after coming from behind to win in each of their previous three home games, but their luck ran out this time. Defeat against Ipswich Town came off the back of a 3-2 Europa League defeat to Galatasaray SK in midweek.
A poor overall display from the Lilywhites allowed the Tractor Boys to take home all three points, leaving Ange Postecoglou frustrated.
ESPN FC pundit Craig Burley slammed Tottenham for their underwhelming display in the defeat to Ipswich Town. He feels Ange Postecoglou’s failure to strike a balance between attacking football and strong defending could end up costing him his job at the Hotspur Way.
“Tottenham have got some stars and they can play some great football, but they just I don’t know what it is there’s a still, still, still soft underbelly to this team. And they leave themselves open and he [Postecoglou] is yet to find the balance between super, attacking good football and proper defending. And I will say it again and keep saying it, if he doesn’t it will eventually cost him his job,” Burnley said in a panel discussion on ESPN FC.
Big Ange’s white army had an excellent the week before the last where they dumped Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup and smashed Aston Villa 4-1 in the Premier League. Spurs were riding high in confidence on the back of those wins but were pulled back on earth by a struggling Ipswich side, via goals from Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap.
This isn’t the first time we have witnessed the north London side to take a step forward and two backwards—the chronic inconsistency hurting Big Ange since he took over the club’s reins last year.
The Greek-Australian coach has to take his share of the responsibility for the loss as he and his coaching staff are yet to address the glaring defensive flaws. The team hasn’t been defending well as a unit for a long time and it is imperative, then, that he fixes these issues that keep impacting the performances.

Of course, after losing 3-2 to Galatasaray in the Europa League midweek, all three points against a relegation-threatened side was the most important thing and Spurs simply were not good enough to record those.
