Tottenham were shocked 2-1 by newly promoted Ipswich Town in the Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur allowed newly promoted Ipswich Town to win their first game of the 2024/25 season—and their first in the Premier League in 22 years—in north London on Sunday.
Sam Szmodics steered an overhead kick beyond Guglielmo Vicario to give Ipswich the lead. Ten minutes later, Liam Delap doubled the lead for the visitors. Rodrigo Bentancur gave Spurs hope with 21 minutes left, heading home from a Pedro Porro corner. Eventually, the Tractor Boys held on to clinch the points and move out of the relegation zone.
With the latest setback, Tottenham continued their inability to build momentum and keep clean sheets. It was an underwhelming display from Ange Postecoglou’s side, throwing away a golden opportunity to climb up the table before heading into the international break.
Skipper Son Heung-min was downcast after his team’s defeat to Ipswich. He felt Tottenham had plenty of moments in the game to grab more goals, terming Sunday’s loss as ‘painful’.
“It’s very disappointing. Before they scored we had a couple of chances. We conceded a very sloppy goal that shouldn’t happen. It’s more than disappointing,” Son Heung-min told BBC Sport.
“Sometimes you have to be calm and find a better solution if someone is in a better position. We have to be better in those kind of situations. It’s very painful.”
Indeed, it was a bitter pill to swallow for Son and his teammates. Ange Postecoglou made some questionable decisions to rotate his squad in midweek vs Galatasaray and we lost the game. The defeat to Galatasaray broke Tottenham’s momentum that was built on the back of Carabao Cup and Premier League wins over Manchester City and Aston Villa, respectively.
The Lilywhites have been a good attacking side under Big Ange, more than capable of destroying any team on their day as we have witnessed many times since the start of last season. However, there are times when the attacking players have let the team down with their end product or selfish attitude to shoot from distance when a simple three-yard pass made sense.

Son’s words are a clear reflection of some of his teammates not making the right decisions on the ball in the final third, costing the team as a whole in the process. This approach and attitude of the players have to change quickly if Spurs are to grow as a team and fight for major honours.
