West Ham are reportedly planning to try and tweak their rebuild in the January with some much-needed younger talent.
The Hammers have looked like a team of geriatrics this season.
West Ham technical director Tim Steidten and manager Julen Lopetegui are both under pressure.
It’s easy to see why.
West Ham’s owners handed over £155m to be spent on a summer rebuild.
It was much-needed because David Moyes preferred a small squad and tried and tested players.
As a result Lopetegui inherited the smallest and second oldest squad in the Premier League.
Somehow Steidten and Lopetegui have managed leave West Ham with the oldest squad in the top flight despite nine new arrivals.
The Athletic embarrassed Lopetegui this week.
The outlet released a damning report which showed the Spaniard – who pledged to champion young players when he arrived at the club – has given zero minutes to club-trained young stars this season.
That’s despite many of West Ham’s ageing, immobile players putting in woeful performances week in, week out.
Reports over the international break made it clear there is a major overhaul in the offing at West Ham.
The Hammers are being linked with six top rising stars.
The team could certainly do with some youthful exuberance and power.
Ex England man: West Ham definitely want superstar’s brother
According to a recent report, West Ham are interested in signing Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland.
But with the January window looming it’s difficult to know what to believe.
Especially as a number of other clubs have also been linked with Bellingham.
Now those rumours have been given some substance.
Because an ex England man has heard West Ham definitely want to sign the brother of superstar Jude Bellingham.
Jobe has been coming of age for Sunderland in the Championship this season.
The 19-year-old has developed into a serious physical specimen like his brother.
Bellingham has two goals and an assist in 12 games so far for the Championship leaders.
But his brilliant average match rating of 7.3/10 shows just good his all-round game has been.
It’s been claimed West Ham are preparing a £20m move.
Now Carlton Palmer has revealed he has heard the Hammers are serious about signing Bellingham.
Palmer offers advice to Bellingham over Hammers move
Palmer says Bellingham needs to think long and hard about the decision.
He believes the young box-to-box star must make his choice based on where he will get the most game time.
And he does feel he would get that at West Ham, although not as much as he might get elsewhere.
“Crystal Palace and West Ham are eyeing up Jobe Bellingham,” Palmer exclusively told Football League World.
“Of course, he’s having a fantastic season for Sunderland who are top of the league. They’re not the only clubs that’s interested in Jobe Bellingham.
“I think Jobe’s destined for a big club like his brother, I think he’s destined for top stuff, but it depends on what Crystal Palace are prepared to pay and what West Ham are prepared to pay…
“Why go to a club and not play? But having said that, if he went to Crystal Palace or West Ham, you would expect him to play. More so at Crystal Palace.”
A move to London and a chance to be a key cog in the rebuild at a big club like West Ham would surely appeal to Bellingham.
Bellingham could be key to rejuvenating West Ham
Sunderland may or may not get promoted. But like most promoted sides they would likely be cannon fodder for a season before going back down.
According to recent reports Guido Rodriguez and Edson Alvarez both want out of West Ham in January.
With Lucas Paqueta’s future definitely away from the club one way or another, Steidten is reportedly looking to revamp West Ham’s central midfield.
Javi Guerra is said to be the man West Ham want to partner Bellingham with at the London Stadium.
That would see the Hammers go from an old, slow engine room to one that is young, tenacious, athletic and full of pace and power.
Let’s hope Palmer’s sources are sound.
Because West Ham could do with some more homegrown talent in their side too.
