Bayern Munich picked up right where they left off before the international break with their Harry-Kane led 3-0 win over Augsburg that saw the England skipper collect yet another Bundesliga hat-trick. A pair of second half penalties and a sublime, tap-in header rounded out the goals for Kane and gave Bayern a sixth straight win on the bounce ever since their 4-1 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League.
Since the loss to Hansi Flick’s Barcelona, Vincent Kompany has led Bayern to six wins, collecting six clean sheets in the process and out-scoring their opponents 17-0. For the two blips they had in Europe against the Blaugrana and Aston Villa, Bayern have made up for it with their domestic form, sitting at the top of the league table and awaiting a clash against Bayer Leverkusen in the next round of the DFB-Pokal.
Former club president Uli Hoeneß is loving the current brand of football the Rekordmeister have been playing under Kompany, and he was rather outspoken about the level of confidence he currently has in the team, Of course, Hoeneß is not exactly the type to bit his tongue or shy away from making his opinions felt, but he already said that he can “promise” the league title for FC Bayern. There is still plenty of football to be played and there is plenty of time for RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and Leverkusen to close the gap.
After the win over Augsburg, Kompany gave plenty of respect to how much Hoeneß means to FC Bayern, but admitted that he is not getting carried away in the slightest. For him, he is taking things one match at a time and not constantly over-worrying himself with the league table. “I have a huge amount of respect for Uli Hoeneß and what he’s done for this club. I’m in regular exchange with him. He has more experience than me so maybe he knows better. But my job is to prepare for the next game. We got 72 points last season and finished third, it was almost the same team. There’s a lot of motivation and hunger for us to be there every game. I’m not looking at the table, I don’t even know how many points we have right now. For me it doesn’t matter. I just want our performances to get better game by game,” he explained (via @iMiaSanMia).
Bayern is also about to enter a difficult stretch of matches with clashes against Paris Saint-Germain, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund coming right around the corner across all three fronts. At the end of December in the last match before the winter break, they also play host to Leipzig, so a lot can change between now and the start of the Rückrunde.
