Postecoglou not worried about Tottenham Hotspur’s top 8 chances after AS Roma draw
Tottenham Hotspur have gone two straight games without a win in the Europa League after losing to Galatasaray on matchday four and then being held to a 2-2 draw by AS Roma in their most recent outing in the competition. After three wins in three matches at the start of the league phase, recent results have meant that Ange Postecoglou’s team is sitting in ninth place in the competition’s table.
The manager was asked in the post-match press conference whether or not he is worried by the team’s position. Postecoglou remained calm in spite of his side picking up just one point out of a possible six in recent weeks as he was quoted saying the following by Football London.
“I have no idea. There’s three games to go and we’re in a pretty decent position. You try to win every game you can and see where that takes you. I think it’ll probably be clearer after the next round but it’s all pretty tight from what I understand. That’s what you expect.”
Tottenham’s position in the Europa League is far from precarious and with three matches to go against relatively easier opponents in Rangers, Hoffenheim and Elfsborg, they should be able to seal qualification into the knockout phase rather comfortably. The new format of UEFA’s continental competitions means other results can also exponentially impact a team’s position in the standings, so if Spurs manage to win the games they have in hand, they could very easily clinch a berth in the top 8.

Amidst fixtures every three days, a top 8 finish would also send Tottenham directly into the competition’s round of 16 which is expected to be held in March and not have to play the playoff round in February, which teams who end from 9th to 24th will contest.
