Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany knows a thing or two about experiencing a big game atmosphere. However, the Belgian has never manned a Bayern Munich visit to see The Yellow Wall.
With his team streaking (in a good way), Kompany feels good about where things stand entering the match.
“The last results were good, we deserved that. But we want to win and perform well tomorrow. This is a classic. I like that games like this get the build-up they deserve leading to them. It’s going to be a tough game,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The fans in Dortmund have always played a role. We have a lot of experience in the team, they are used to it. The focus is on what happens on the pitch. Preparation is important and then we want to go onto the pitch with confidence. It’s a nice task to play such an away game.
“When we face a team, we always prepare for the best version of them. When they are at their best, they press very high. They are also dangerous on the counterattack. They have a lot of quality and pace on the wings. When they are at their best, they are also very, very good at building up the play. It’s not going to be an easy game, it’ll be tough.”
The intensity surrounding the game might have been heightened by the recent statements by Uli Hoeneß, where he essentially guaranteed a league title. Kompany said that the Bayern Munich legend’s statements can standalone and do not necessarily need to be endorsed by anyone.
“Uli Hoeneß can say what he wants. After a statement, you always come running very quickly. I have big respect for someone like Uli Hoeneß, who has done so much for this club. But then there’s also our perspective. It’s been the biggest game in German football in recent years. That is respect. We are looking forward to playing this game. It’s a special game,” said Kompany.
When asked about his team’s shutout streak, Kompany tried to hide his happiness about the situation, but his fondness for his defensive unit was able to shine through anyway.
“If you look at the big picture, it’s important for us not to look too much at how others see our players. Sometimes they see them as the worst, sometimes as the best. Sometimes as best and worst on the same day. It’s how we see them that’s important. The fact that they’ve now reached their best level is like a journey. But that’s not just down to the defenders themselves, it’s down to the overall structure of the team. We said before the season that we could do it,” said Kompany.
