Tottenham re-signed Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig with an option to buy
Daniel Levy will be looking to replicate the club’s success in the recently concluded summer transfer window, when Tottenham not only signed highly regarded players but also cleared the surplus at White Hart Lane.
Apart from Wilson Odobert, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Dominic Solanke arriving at the club in the summer, Timo Werner re-signed on a season-long loan from RB Leipzig which includes a £8.5 million buy option. Minutes have come with scrutiny for the German as he has been royally inconsistent for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
The 28-year-old has failed to significantly impact return to the North London outfit, starting only two Premier League games. He has been involved in 15 games across all competitions, contributing just one goal and two assists to date.
What has frustrated many of the Spurs faithful has been the wastefulness of Timo Werner in front of goal, which was evident during his time at Chelsea. In a surprise update last month, the Lilywhites have refused to rule out the possibility of making Werner’s loan switch from RB Leipzig a permanent move.
However, ex-scout Bryan King feels Spurs should avoid signing Werner permanently in the summer. In fact, the club insider admitted he was surprised that Daniel Levy decided to bring the Germany international back to the club, terming him “not a Tottenham player”.
“I don’t think Spurs should sign Werner permanently,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.
“There are more important positions to be sorted out, they already have enough wide players at the club. It was a surprise for me when he joined Spurs in the first place.
“For me, he’s not a Tottenham player. He’s come into the club, he’s obviously been professional in his attitude. However, I just don’t see him as a Spurs player.”
The chiefs at the Hotspur Way are holding off making a final decision on Werner’s future. Despite continuing to consider the options in attack, the North London outfit have no interest in ending the ex-Chelsea man’s stay prematurely, especially due to a lack of options out wide.
With Richarlison, Wilson Odobert and Mikey Moore currently out, Big Ange only has Werner, Son Heung-min and Brennan Johnson as wing options to negotiate the busy fixture schedule. Werner, who was dubbed as one of the worst summer signings by ESPN FC pundit Don Hutchinson, will feel he still has a long-term future at the club. The Stuttgart-born talent will want to prove himself to Daniel Levy and Big Ange that he can add value to the squad in the long term.
Nonetheless, the 28-year-old is not good enough to play for a club like Tottenham and without any second thoughts our club must not sign Werner permanently.
