Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has given a big update on the availability of their star center-back Cristian Romero ahead of their forthcoming encounter against Fulham.
The defender has missed his club’s last two games due to a foot injury he sustained against Aston Villa earlier this month. The injury happened again while he was on international duty with Argentina over the break.
In their last league match, the Lilywhites secured a remarkable 4-0 win against the defending champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. They also marked their presence in the European competition with a 2-2 draw against Roma in a Europa League group-stage match.
It is worth mentioning that Postecoglou’s team is already without first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who will be out for months after sustaining ankle surgery, as well as forward Richarlison, winger Wilson Odobert, and forward Mikey Moore, all of whom are injured.
Romero to miss the match against Fulham
Postecoglou has clarified that Romero is ‘unlikely’ to be available for their upcoming match against the Cottagers.
“Romero is closer and is probably the closest. But again, probably unlikely, I’m not ruling him out. He has got to get through a few things today and we have another session tomorrow.”
The probable unavailability of the Argentine International leaves his club coach with no option other than opting for the defending duo of Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies for their forthcoming game at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Currently earning around £ 165,000 per week, Romero is a key defensive player for his Australian coach, and his absence is a significant concern for his club.
Postecoglou may need to modify the tactics that are thought to be ideal for the game and the players, given the absence of his leading defender. The experienced coach might adopt a more defensive approach or alter formations to provide additional support defensively.
Currently holding the seventh position in the ongoing season of England’s top-tier football, Spurs will undoubtedly need Romero back as soon as possible to advance in the points table.
