It appears that West Ham are not the only club to issue a ‘one more game’ ultimatum, as Gary O’Neil now seems to face precisely that.
The heat is on Wolves boss O’Neil following a crushing 2-1 defeat at The London Stadium. However, the under-fire manager remains adamant he can steer the club to safety.
It now seems O’Neil is being given one last chance, just as Lopetegui was before their ‘El Sackico’ encounter on Monday.
Monday’s defeat at in East London marked Wolves’ third consecutive loss, leaving them second-bottom of the Premier League and four points adrift of safety. Whilst it was a massive relief for J-Lo and his happy Hammers the Wanderers gaffer had much to complain about.
With both O’Neil and Lopetegui under scrutiny ahead of the clash, Irons gaffer has bought himself some breathing room, while O’Neil’s position looks increasingly precarious. Quite frankly, I’m surprised he survived the encounter at The London Stadium, but it seems ‘nine lives’ O’Neil will get one final game against Ipswich Town.
The Wolves manager was fuming about the number of decisions that went against his side and if I’m honest, I did agree with him on the clumsy challenge from Mavropanos.
“I’m not concerned,” O’Neil said when questioned about his future. “I’m proud of the group and what they’ve given me. All I can ask is their best effort.”
The embattled boss insists the squad is still behind him as they face a daunting survival fight.
“We won’t give up,” O’Neil vowed. “We’ll keep pushing.”
