Scott McTominay is working his way back from injury, ahead of Man United’s crucial season run-in.
The equation is simple. Win three of their final four games and Manchester United will finish inside the top four. That quest starts today, at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Erik ten Hag’s side have to find a way to win this match. No ifs, buts or maybes. Three points here is all that will suffice. Raphael Varane is back fit for this game, though Marcus Rashford is a ‘major’ doubt. It’ll be interesting to see whether he plays…
This morning, further injury news has emerged. United have been boosted with one player said to be ‘on the way back’; Scott McTominay. The midfielder is seemingly back on the training pitch, though he will not be involved at Old Trafford today.
Check out what the gaffer had to say in full here:
“It’s good news that Scott is on the way back.” Ten Hag told ManUtd.com.
“He’s made really good steps,”
“He’s close, but not close enough to make the selection for [today].”
McTominay has now been unavailable for several weeks, leaving United a little bit thinner in the middle of the park. The timely loan signing of Marcel Sabitzer has meant that it hasn’t been as much of a problem as possible.
The Scot’s situation is an intriguing one. As a squad player, United could do far worse, though I get the impression that, if the price is right, United could move away from McTominay this summer.
With club ownership status still up in the air, United will have to generate some of their own funds if they want to spend big this summer. McTominay has potential to fetch in a more than decent transfer fee – particularly if it’s coming from a Premier League rival.
For now, though, it’s up to the academy graduate to try and play his part, helping United to close out the season strong.
