Man United have seemingly begun conversations about signing Napoli centre-back, Kim Min-jae.
Manchester United have many holes to fill within their squad ahead of the 2023/24 season. Slowly but surely, this dressing room is being moulded into one that fits Eirk ten Hag’s ideology.
This summer a new striker is the top priority, though it’s unlikely to be the only position addressed. The need for a new centre-half is also somewhat glaring. Outside of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, there’s little stylistic fit within the squad in that position.
Kim Min-jae is a name that has been linked recently. The Napoli man has enjoyed an incredible campaign, with United certainly showing an interest in the defender from South Korea.
The latest update in this growing transfer rumour comes from France. Namely Foot Mercato. They state that United have opened talks to sign the 26-year-old centre-half.
However, the Red Devils will not have it all their own way. They’ll face competition from both Liverpool and PSG for the signature of the centre-half.
Min-jae has a release clause of around £40m that comes into effect this July, hence, many of Europe’s top teams are showing a real interest in acquiring the defender for an extremely reasonable fee.
This would be an outstanding piece of business if United could somehow pull it off. The minimum requirement for the Red Devils has to be a top four finish, with Min-jae looking to play Champions League football again next term.
Even then, it’s by no means a given that United will sign the centre-half. There’s a real chance he’ll choose to stay in Naples. After all, they’ve just won a league title and if they can keep their main core together, they’ll be amongst the favourites for next season’s Champions League.
What United have in their favour is the money they can offer Min-jae. Perhaps that’ll be too good to turn down for a player who only has one or two big contracts ahead of him in his footballing future.
