Man United are weighing up a possible move to sign Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel.
It seems like all the talk post-West Ham away has been about the possibility of Manchester United signing a new goalkeeper. Given David de Gea’s pretty poor display, it does make sense.
The Spaniard has been an unbelievable servant to United. That’ll never change. However, a once world-class goalkeeper no longer fits the bill here at old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag loves his shot-stopper to be able to play out from the back. That’s probably the weakest aspect of De Gea’s game, which is obviously less than ideal.
According to The Independent, despite contract talks with De Gea, United could look elsewhere, with Gregor Kobel now rumoured to be a target.
Apparently, United are ‘considering a move’ for the 25-year-old goalkeeper, who is playing a starring role for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga during their title charge.
Kobel fits the style of play that Ten Hag wants to deploy, though United will not have it all their own way should they move for the Switzerland international. Dortmund are aware of long-standing interest in their number one, with Chelsea also keen on bringing in the goalie.
Although no sort of transfer fee is mentioned by The Independent, Kobel is under contract until 2026. That gives Dortmund plenty of room for manoeuvre. they will not be forced into parting with Kobel unless the price is right for them.
The only problem I foresee with this is the fact that De Gea is going to sign a new deal here in Manchester. Is Kobel going to be willing to compete for a starting job at this stage in his career? I’d doubt it.
