Man United are looking to keep Jack Butland at the club this summer, preparing to double his wages in the process.
Manchester United Football Club may look to sign a goalkeeper on a permanent deal this summer, irrelevant of what happens with David de Gea’s contract situation.
The Spaniard has not covered himself in glory of late, making some costly mistakes at times. His distribution out from the back has also come in for criticism.
Today’s rumour does indeed link United with signing a new goalkeeper permanently – but not who you’d expect; Jack Butland.
It’s The Scottish Sun with the story. They state that United are ‘ready to double’ the wages of the 30-year-old, in order to keep him at Old Trafford, fending off interest from Rangers in the process.
Butland, who is out of contract this summer, was being targeted by the Scottish club on a free transfer, with his Crystal Palace deal running out this summer.
The goalkeeper is yet to play a game for the Red Devils, though Erik ten Hag has decided he wants to bring back Butland as cover for both De Gea and Dean Henderson.
Butland must have impressed in training, with United looking to bring him back on a permanent deal after this loan move.
The decision now lies with the player. Does he want to play regularly elsewhere? Or is he content collecting higher wages and sitting on United’s bench for the most part?
Butland has only played 17 games over the last three years, so if minutes is his biggest motivation, I suspect a move to Rangers could still come to fruition. At the end of the day, though, this is his job and it may prove tough to turn down more money.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see how this one plays out.
