Man United are weighing up an improved contract for Lisandro Martinez – though talks haven’t started yet.
Earlier this week, we covered a claim which stated that Lisandro Martinez was set to be awarded a new contract by Manchester United.
The Argentine has been supremely impressive since his move from Ajax, with the Old Trafford Faithful adoring ‘Licha’ already. Sadly, his season was ended prematurely due to a relatively serious knee injury.
Fabrizio Romano has since shared his latest information on contract talk for ‘The Butcher’. The Italian journalist has seemed to cool down a new deal for Martinez, though one still looks likely to happen relatively soon.
Apparently, United are ‘already considering’ an improved contract for the defender, though those talks are yet to take place. They’re also not ‘imminent’.
Rather than a new deal looking set in stone for Martinez, it feels like United are weighing up the possibility right now.
The defender’s current deal runs for another four years, meaning there should be no rush to offer Martinez improved terms.
Although Licha would deserve a significant pay increase, it just doesn’t make sense from a business perspective – particularly with Martinez going into next season on the back of an injury.
I fully understand wanting to reward the player because he has been sensational and deserves to be among the front runners to win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, though the more I think about it, it just feels a little premature.
That’s not to say I wouldn’t be happy to see Martinez get his money. He absolutely deserves it. There’s just no real reason to offer him a bump up in pay after one season – particularly if the length of the deal isn’t going to be increased.
