Shaun Wright-Phillips parades the Premier League trophy in front of his dad Ian Wright, as the heartbroken Arsenal legend jokes it’s ‘not funny’… after the Gunners lost to Nottingham Forest to hand Man City the title
Shaun Wright-Phillips could not resist winding up his dad Ian Wright by showing off the Premier League trophy right in front of him after Arsenal’s title challenge ended once and for all on Saturday night.
Having led the league for 248 days this season, Arsenal slipped to their third defeat in five games as they lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest to hand Manchester City their third straight title.
Arsenal legend Wright has been backing his former club all season, but in the end it was Pep Guardiola’s men that came out on top, and Wright-Phillips, who played 273 games for City across two spells, rubbed salt into the wounds shortly after the full-time whistle in Nottingham.
Optus Sport finished their coverage with Wright-Phillips walking into the studio with the Premier League trophy covered with light blue ribbons to represent the colours of City.
The ex-City winger burst out laughing as he set the trophy down right next to his dad, who started smiling but declared ‘It’s not funny!’

The trophy was within touching distance of Wright, and the popular pundit joked that it was ‘too close’ having watched his side lead the way for most of the season only to falter at the final hurdle.
He went on to joke about ‘having a word’ with the production team following his son’s stunt, but finished by admitting that City were worthy winners while also hailing Arsenal’s efforts across the course of the campaign.
‘My club has given me so much love and fun this season, trying to go for it. But again, we’re coming up against a monster in City and they’ve deserved it with the way they’ve finished the season.’
After an unconvincing first half of the season, City have been dominant in recent months, winning 11 straight league games to move clear of Arsenal.
Following the Gunners’ defeat on Saturday, City now have a four-point lead and two games in hand on Mikel Arteta’s side.
They will get the chance to lift the trophy for real today following their final home game of the season against Chelsea, with the Blues also set to give them a guard of honour before kick-off.
Having wrapped up their first trophy, City still have two more to play for in the coming weeks as they attempt to win the Treble.
They play arch-rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley on June 3, before facing Inter Milan in the Champions League final the following week.
Wright was left sat within touching distance of the trophy, which will be staying with City for another season
