Kevin De Bruyne admits to being a Liverpool fan in vintage clip of the Man City star… and he names a former Reds striker as his favourite player
- Kevin de Bruyne signed for Manchester City for £55m from Wolfsburg in 2015
- The Belgian has starred for City as they have become a trophy-winning machine
- However, a clip has emerged showing him confessing his love of Liverpool
Manchester City star man Kevin de Bruyne used to be a Liverpool fan and dreamt of playing for the club one day, new footage has revealed.
The 32-year-old has become a legend at the Etihad since his arrival in 2015, winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League, five League Cups and two FA Cups.
Many of them have come at the expense of the Anfield club, who have fought titanic battles with Pep Guardiola’s men over the past five years.
However an old clip showing a young De Bruyne at boyhood club Genk revealed his allegiance used to be towards the Reds – with Michael Owen an old hero of his.
‘My favourite club is Liverpool and my favourite player is Michael Owen,’ an 11-year-old De Bruyne admitted in old video footage whilst he was still at Genk. ‘And I would love to play there one day.’

In 2019 the two-time PFA Player of the Year doubled down on his support for the Reds.
‘I was a Liverpool fan,’ he told Match of the Day magazine. ‘My family that live in England were all Liverpool supporters so I was, too.
‘I loved Michael Owen because I was really small like him and quick, too. I compared myself to him at the time. I liked [Zinedine] Zidane and Ronaldinho too – those really skilful players.’
De Bruyne has enjoyed some epic battles against Liverpool, appearing 17 times in all competitions and scoring four goals while providing eight assists.
He has scored in four of the last six Premier League games against Liverpool and also played a key role as Man City narrowly beat Jurgen Klopp’s side to the league title in 2019 and 2022.
The playmaker is currently injured after coming off during the Champions League final triumph against Inter Milan with a hamstring – and is set to miss the start of the Premier League campaign.
