The current transfer window saw Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan move on a free transfer to FC Barcelona. Since then, City signed Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea. But as per reports, the Manchester-based team is not done.
City are reportedly keen on adding another midfielder to their squad. While the club missed out on signing Declan Rice, City have now registered their interest in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong.
As per reports, City is planning to make a €110 million move for the Dutchman. Veteran journalist Dean Jones confirmed City’s interest in the player. However, he also mentioned that he thinks City won’t be able to sign the player. Jones said:
“They only really intended to go out and do Gvardiol and Kovacic, but we shouldn’t rule out other players arriving, and one of those is the potential for a midfielder.”
He further continued:
“Frenkie de Jong has been linked; I can’t see them being able to get Frankie in this window. Gabri Veiga has been linked; he’s probably a bit more seeable. It’ll be interesting to see if Man City has a trick up their sleeve, but first and foremost, they’ll look to get that Gvardiol deal done.”
While Frenkie De Jong is extremely loyal to FC Barcelona, the club’s financial trouble is not a secret. Hence, if City is willing to shell out big money, it won’t be a surprise to see Barcelona considering selling the player.
Manchester City target Frenkie De Jong had a successful season last year
Frenkie De Jong was the star of the FC Barcelona team that won La Liga for the first time since the 2018-19 season. In doing so, De Jong played very well for his club and gave it his all on the field.
In 33 La Liga matches for the club, De Jong has found the net twice and has dished out four assists in the process. While Barca manager Xavi would love to have him in his team next season, it will be interesting to see if De Jong is able to refuse treble-winners Manchester City.
