Man United still have eyes on Bayern Munich midfielder, Leon Goretzka.
Manchester United Football Club have made no bones about their desire to sign a midfielder (or two) this summer. First, Mason Mount arrived from Chelsea in a big-money deal, then, the Reds have been eyeing other targets.
The common feeling is that if United are buying another central player, then one (or more) will have to be sold by way of balancing the books.
The Reds have been linked with several faces, including the likes of Sofyan Amrabat and more recently, Romeo Lavia.
Now, Florian Plettenberg has reminded us of another name; Leon Goretzka.
According to the journalist, the 28-year-old is ‘still on the list’ for United, and the club nave ‘never lost their focus’ on the Bayern Munich midfielder.
Initially, Goretzka wanted to stay in Bavaria, though his mindset may have shifted due to the fact that he is not a guaranteed starter for the Bundesliga champions right now.
A move to Old Trafford would be classed as a step sideways for the player, who’d be moving from one European elite to another.
The verdict
The problem? I’m not sure Goretzka would be guaranteed starts here, either. Bruno Fernandes is locked in to that number ten position, while I do not see Casemiro and Mason Mount sitting out to allow the German to play week-in-week-out. He’d be fourth choice at best.
It’d also hamper the development of Kobbie Mainoo. I know he’s injured right now, but he is the future of our midfield. Do the club really want to stunt his growth by bringing in a semi-expensive fourth or fifth choice option? I’m not so sure.
