Mauricio Pochettion has delivered an update on Reece James in a bleak post-match press conference at Goodison Park after a 2-0 defeat.
James was taken off in the first half, and as was suspected, it’s a hamstring injury. The right back didn’t show too much emotion, but his embrace with his coach on the touchline told us everything we needed to know.
We can just hope it’s minor, but even then, it’s another nail in the coffin of the idea that James can shake off these injuries.
Pochettino had the following to say about his captain, who has already missed a chunk of this season:
“He felt something in his hamstring. It’s not nice for him… [He’s] an important player for us, one of the best footballers in the world. We’re really disappointed. This has to change because [Malo] Gusto is also still recovering.”
As Pochettino points out, this is just that much worse because Malo Gusto is out injured too. We seem to have signed the only right back in the world with worse availability than James to back him up.
Back to Disasi or Cucurella at right back next week… things are only getting more painful as we approach the busiest part of our season.
