ESPN have been looking back on Chelsea’s defeat to Everton, and their pundit Steve Nicol had a point to make about Reece James, who went off injured in the first half.
Nicol questioned whether James’ endless injury problems are now as much in his head as in his body. Perhaps, he speculated, the long lay offs he’s had are getting to him, and now he’s interpreting everything he feels as a problem, when it might not be that bad.
“I don’t want to say this as a fact, but it’s kinda getting to the stage where you think there’s something going on in Reece James’ head whenever he feels anything. It’s just happened too often. That’s a bad place to be as a professional athlete,” the pundit said.
We know what he means – having such a horrible injury record is certain to affect a player mentally too.
But we’re not sure James will appreciate the implication that he’s feeling phantom injuries.
