Often in life, things go full circle.
Something starts out as simple, then people make it so complicated that the most simple things are lost.
That’s what seems to have happened with Chelsea’s recruitment. They’ve been so focused on the niche aspects of their fancy data driven recruitment and cool looking graphs that they’ve forgotten the obvious – is this group tall enough?
Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t think so. A report in the Evening Standard today notes that Chelsea’s squad is one of the shortest in the Premier League, and the manager is keen to address that as part of improving generally.
A lack of height is something that affects you negatively both in attack and defence. At least we’ve now got a tall goalkeeper.
The piece says that Pochettino wants to target a defender, a central midfielder and a striker.
That sounds a lot like this summer, no? £400m spent and we’re still looking for the same things we were before we spent that cash.
