Chelsea’s last few transfer windows have been a disaster.
The summer of 2022 saw the new owners getting involved personally, with predictably disastrous results like Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Last January was a bit of a mix – the sporting directors were in place, but we still saw Cool Dude Behdad Eghbali jet off to seal a deal for Mykhailo Mudryk personally (what a signing that has turned out to be, by the way…)
Regarding January, the recruitment model will function much the same. Pochettino will naturally have a say, and perhaps more so than summer given he’s had time to bed in, but Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley still very much still leading things.

This summer seemed to finally be 100% led by our co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. But the results haven’t been much better. They paid a lot for players who only ended up arriving right at the end of August – and after spending insane money, we’re no better off than we were at the end of the 2021-2022 season.
Ben Jacobs has today confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino will continue to have an input on what players are signed, but Stewart and Winstanley are “still very much leading things.”
Let’s hope they make a better fist of this time around.
