Matt Law is one the longest serving Chelsea correspondents in the British press, and he always has good links upstairs at Chelsea.
His piece in the Daily Telegraph today says that there’s a recognition inside Stamford Bridge that 2023 has been a “disaster.” Well, you’d have to be pretty blind to ignore it.
The Blues have the worst points per game ration in the whole league, despite spending £750m since January. Disaster doesn’t quite cover it.
A source in the piece is quoted as squarely ruling out any chance of signing Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen either. It’s a vicious circle now: we can’t get into Europe so we can’t get good players, which makes it harder to get into Europe.
“Chelsea are not going to qualify for Europe next season the way they’ve been going, so they would have to offer either Osimhen or Toney really big money. That’s not something they’ve been doing this year,” the source said.
Backing up other briefs we’ve seen today, the piece notes that a central striker and a dominant centre back are what the transfer team are looking for. Despite a “disaster” year of spending, the only level they have to pull is opening their cheque book.
