Chelsea fans have finally got what they wanted to hear from the mouth of Mauricio Pochettino: Christopher Nkunku will be in the squad for tomorrow’s game against Sheffield United.
Since we saw him in training a couple of weeks ago the coach has been asked constantly about his return, and today he was finally able to give an affirmative answer. It wasn’t 100%, but it sounds a lot like he will be in the squad.
“Yes, he can be involved. That is very good news. To be involved tomorrow and be in the squad and to feel the competition after the pre-season is good news for us,” Pochettino said.
“We need to be calm and quiet so not to put all the pressure on him. Now he’s going to evolve, know the Premier League. It’s a big motivation for us, for the teammates, and the fans to see a player that should be important for us and to be in the squad for the first time.”
It’s been a long painful wait since the summer to see the Frenchman in action, and this weekend could finally be the moment. Pochettino is tyring to play down the impact he will make at these early stages, but the pressure is very much on.
A few minutes off the bench is likely the best we can hope for this week, but it’s an important step towards adjusting to a new league and getting used to his teammates and the weekly routines, as Pochettino himself said.
