A little while ago we wrote about a rumor that suggested Sergio Reguilon could have his Manchester United loan ended after only a half season. Now, according to David Ornstein, it’s a done deal — Fab reports that United have activated a break clause in Sergio’s loan contract that will send him back to Spurs.
EXCL: Sergio Reguilon is rejoining Tottenham Hotspur from Manchester United. Season-long loan included break clause for left-back to return in January & #MUFC have activated that option (always minded to do so). 27yo played 12 games @TheAthleticFC #THFC https://t.co/vOsC8tmGlO

I’m not at all surprised by this. Reguilon was loaned to United as emergency left back cover as United had an injury crisis in that position. Sergio made 12 total appearances for United in the first half of the season, but that injury crisis seems to have resolved itself and he’s not going to get much match time going forward.
So it’s back to Spurs. But that doesn’t mean that he’s going to be fullback cover in North London again. He was pretty awful in Tottenham’s preseason matches and doesn’t seem to be a good stylistic fit for Ange-Ball. It sounds like Postecoglou prefers an out of position Emerson Royal to Sergio in his natural role. It’s way more likely that Reguilon heads back out on loan sometime this month — BILD claims that Reggie is Dortmund’s top priority in this window and since he never played a regular season match with Spurs this season he can still head back out for a second loan stint.
But I guess you never know. We’ll probably find out more here in the coming days.
