good morning!
We’ve featured Charles Mingus a good number of times in recent months, but you know what’s been missing? A post about Charles Mingus.
Let’s correct course a little bit on this Monday, then, and chat about Charles Mingus.
Thanks to my favourtie record store – Gerosa Records in Brookfield, Connecticut – I learned that there is a box set of Charles Mingus from his time at Birdland in New York City.
The 4-LP box set, called Mingus Takes Manhattan, apparently is the first official release of Mingus’s performances at the legendary New York jazz club.
According to the description, Mingus alternates between piano and bass during this treasure.
And it even features an essay penned by Christian McBride, your hoddler-in-chief’s favourite modern-day jazz musician.
Only problem is – I don’t own it !! Not yet. It’s a little expensive, somewhere between $175-$200. But that isn’t to say I won’t ever own it.
Mingus Takes Manhattan has catapulted near the very top of fitzie’s must-have list. If I ever am fortunate enough to own a piece of it myself, I will report back here.
