Former Premier League striker Glenn Murray has praised Conor Gallagher for “showing character” after Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Leeds in the FA Cup last night.
Gallagher was sent on by Mauricio Pochettino with the scores level at 2-2 and that move paid off as the 24 year old scored the winner in the last minute.
The England international missed a number of big opportunities in the Carabao Cup final but bounced back quickly with a really important goal for the Blues and Mauricio Pochettino.
Murray speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live was full of praise for Gallagher and believes he showed character and stood up when Chelsea needed him.
He said: “For me, he’s one of the standout performers this season. He gets quite a lot of criticism at times, but I like what he does for them.”
“I think he adds an energy to the way they play. Yeah he missed a couple of chances that have been well documented in the final on Sunday, but do you know what? He showed character and that’s what Chelsea need at the moment. He’s bounced back and got them through to the FA Cup quarter-finals with a late goal.”
Gallagher has established himself as a regular this season and is one of the Blues most important players, but despite this questions surround his future with his current contract expiring in 2025 with there currently being no sign of a new deal.
The midfielder will no doubt have a key role to play on Saturday as Chelsea return to Premier League action away at Brentford.
