Arne Slot may not have ended up as Tottenham Hotspur head coach, but it looks like he might end up taking one of Spurs’ unwanted players. A report in Dutch outlet 1908.nl says that Feyenoord have made a concrete offer to Tottenham for Bryan Gil, which if accepted would go through when the summer transfer window opens.
According to the report, Feyenoord made an approach for Gil back in January for a half season loan, but Gil turned down the deal, wanting to prove himself at Spurs. Since then, Bryan has played exactly five minutes of first-team football at Tottenham, suggesting that whatever he was trying to prove to Ange Postecoglou, he hasn’t been successful in proving it.
The initial report form 1908.nl is a week old, and suggests that Feyenoord were looking at all options — permanent transfer, “dry” loan, loan with a purchase option. There’s a short update today that suggests that the Dutch club has upped their offer slightly, and depending on how you interpret the tweet below, the offer is concrete and/or Feyenoord believe it’s likely to be accepted.
Note that we don’t know what the offer is, or how much, but at this point I’m not sure it matters. Moving Gil on is almost certainly the best thing for both him and for the club as it opens a roster spot that can be filled either by a new signing — a wide dribbly winger perhaps? — or an academy player. Selling Gil is almost the lowest of low-hanging fruit (Tanguy Ndombele is the lowest) but it’s still work that needs to be done if Spurs want to continue their squad refresh. And the Eredivisie seems like a league where Gil could rehabilitate himself and even become a star.
