So this week has been fun for a change of pace! It’s my last Hoddle now for a while, with Fitzie returning Monday.
I’d like to sign off with some good news, and a thank you to all doctors, nurses, and associated medical professionals out there.
Yesterday, my youngest daughter was 6 months old. Just 5 months earlier, we were in hospital for some time as she battled a rare issue with her liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts. I know that what we faced was nothing compared to what some parents deal with – but hard is relative, right? It was a pretty traumatic experience all round.
I won’t go into too many details, but at different points we were looking at surgery, possible death, then potentially looking okay, then surgery again… you get the picture. Eventually, a non-invasive treatment course was identified, which we were able to administer from home and we got to leave hospital. But all through this experience all the medical personnel involved were just phenomenal.
And I don’t just mean good at their jobs, though they were – they managed to identify and treat something that multiple doctors said they’d never seen in 20+ years of practicing medicine – but they went above and beyond to bring joy and hope in a pretty horrible situation.
Yesterday, my youngest daughter was 6 months old, and yesterday she was given the all-clear. Her liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts are healthy and functioning properly.
All of you out there involved in medicine, especially doctors and nurses working with children: thank you. We are forever grateful for the impact you have; and I’m sure many of us in this community have had life-changing experiences (or even life-saving) thanks to the intervention of medical professionals. If you know a doctor or nurse – make sure you give them a shout-out!
