good morning everyone —-
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Sunday announced this year’s induction class. And, boy, is it big.
Two bits before we get started. One, the RRHOF shouldn’t be taken seriously. The whole concept is pretty dumb. And it’s more fun to do this when you know these inductions don’t matter.
Two, let’s revisit who I predicted for the artist category: Cher, Mariah Carey, Foreigner, Kool & The Gang, Oasis, Sinead O’Connor, Ozzy Oscbourne
And now the RRHOF inductees:
Performers: Mary J Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, A Tribe Called Quest
Early/musical influences: Alexis Korner, John Mayall, Big Mama Thornton
Award for musical excellence: Jimmy Buffett, Dionne Warwick, MC5
Non-performers: Suzanne de Passe
And now for my thoughts:
- One, I wasn’t too far off with the artist. I’m surprised Mariah Carey and Sinead O’Connor didn’t get in. It’s also weird to think more people thought DMB was more deserving to get the nod than Oasis.
- Two, that is A LOT of inductees. Fourteen artists in all. Eight performers plus six consolation prizes the RRHOF likes to use for artists not deserving enough to make the big time.
- Having said that, John Mayall is a nice surprise and should’ve gone in sooner. Considering his band helped forge the careers of Eric Clapton, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Micky Taylor and others, this came a couple decades too late.
- Having said that, this RRHOF continues the recent tradition of diluting itself. Fourteen is too many and there are a lot of fringe artists getting in. Now that we have even more on the fringe getting in (MC5, Warwick, DMB, Frampton) the classes are gonna get weaker and weaker.
- Ozzy Osbourne is probably the most befitting artist to get the nod here.
I think the RRHOF did alright, considering this was an uninspiring slate of nominees (except for Ozzy). Really, he should be the only inductee in the performers category. But hey, we’re already scraping at the bottom of the barrel.
Looking forward to what happens once we get through it.
