Things have not been great for Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka off the pitch over the course of this season.
Doubted by head coach Thomas Tuchel. Goretzka turned in a very good season anyway, but was not rewarded with a spot on the German national team for the EURO 2024 competition.
Regardless of that, Goretzka tries to keep himself on top of his game at all times. In fact, Goretzka embraces the need to be held to a high standard.
“Yes, that is the job as a footballer. We live in a fast-paced daily business. You are only as good as you were in the last game. In my career in club football, I have won all the major titles that you can win with a big club like FC Bayern. Nevertheless, this season I experienced what it means to be criticized as a leader. This makes it clear to you again that you are obliged to perform week in week out,” Goretzka told Sports Illustrated (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
When Goretzka does hit a downturn in his performance, what does he do to combat it? The midfielder said that he makes adjustments, but always keeps his eyes on his long-term goals.
“I don’t make my training dependent on situations that I experience week after week. I have long-term training plans. But of course, the motivation to correct things when things go badly is always there,” said Goretzka.
