The result of the general election in UK on July 4 could have a big impact on Liverpool and the Premier League.
There are plans for football that could significantly alter the game according to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer.
The United Kingdom will hold elections this summer as Prime Minister Sunak has confirmed.
The country may see a new leader and a new ruling party in light of the Conservative Party’s recent losses in local elections.
Sky News reports that Sir Keir Starmer would become the next Prime Minister if Labour Party wins. Regarding the establishment of an impartial football regulator Sunak and Starmer have both voiced their opinions about the Premier League’s future.
In an effort to create such a regulator, Sunak has fully endorsed the Football Governance Bill. In March a representative of the Department of Digital Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) declared:
“We continue to work with leagues and clubs in advance of the Football Governance Bills introduction because the government supports football fans. With supporters at its core we have a clear plan to ensure a sustainable future for football which will be realized through our upcoming legislation which will establish a strict new independent regulator.”

The Premier League’s failure to reach an agreement on a new sponsorship with the EFL has prompted calls for the establishment of an independent regulator.
A proposed agreement worth approximately £900 million, spread over six years called for Premier League clubs to provide greater financial support for the lower leagues, but no agreement could be reached.
On the other hand , Starmer has prioritized defending the Premier League’s standing as the best football league in the world while simultaneously providing support to lower league teams. The need to weigh the interests of all football stakeholders was stressed by Starmer in an April interview with Sky News.
He remarked “I believe they have concerns and we were listening to what they have to say. The bill provides the lower league clubs with the necessary financial sustainability. But the Premier League needs to be safeguarded as well.
This nation produces the best football in the world and I want to make sure that it is well safeguarded. For this reason it is crucial that we all confer with all pertinent parties and ensure that the model we are implementing for the first time is appropriate and sustainable. And it does safeguard every one of those interests including the Premier League.”
All final decisions regarding the creation of an independent football regulator are probably going to be postponed until after the upcoming general election.

Nevertheless Liverpool and other Premier League teams will be keeping a careful eye on the election results and any ensuing developments. The result may bring about major modifications to the UK football leagues governance affecting everything from overall league operations to financial distributions.
Given that the outcome of the election may have a lasting impact on English football, both clubs and supporters of the game will be closely monitoring the platforms of the two major parties as the election draws closer.
