Vincent Kompany’s appointment as the next Bayern Munich head coach has stirred excitement in the Bavarian fanbase — but also raised a few eyebrows.
One of those feeling a mixture of both is former Bayern and Belgium center-back Daniel van Buyten.
“I’ve known Vincent Kompany for a long time. He’s young, that means it’s a chance but also a risk,” Van Buyten said in comments captured by Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia). “Vincent will still have to get used to the environment in Munich and the pressure. I will be watching the project with excitement, but I was surprised by the choice.”
Big Dan, as he was known, enjoyed a long tenure with the Rekordmeister, from 2006 to 2014. So he surely knows a thing or two about the constant pressures of playing for Germany’s biggest club. For his Belgian compatriot, the task will be compounded by the added spotlight of Bayern’s push to recapture the Bundesliga title next season.
