Borussia Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke always seems to give us entertaining interviews, and somehow always has something to say about Bayern Munich. Except this time, it’s something good.
Watzke was asked about Bayern and the problems within the club following recent events. Here’s what he had to say on the failed ‘transfer of power’ from Uli Hoeneß.
“I will not take part in the current Bayern bashing. Especially in a phase like this, we should show Bayern the respect they deserve. No club in Germany has done more for German football than FC Bayern. It may be the case that there are problems during a transition. But Uli Hoeneß’s life’s work will always be exceptional. I’ve always enjoyed arguing with Bayern – I’m sure I’ll do that again at some point. But I have to say that FC Bayern has done a lot for German football. And that is closely linked to Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.”
He then commented on Bayern’s dominance in the Bundesliga and German football. His views on Die Rekordmeister seemed to have changed after BVB made it to the Champions League finals, and maybe it has gotten to his head?
“Bayern will have a hard time in the next two or three years developing the kind of dominance they had under Pep Guardiola. The top of the Bundesliga has simply gotten better, which can also be seen in the results in Europe. I no longer believe in this extreme dominance, with eleven titles in a row. But the fact is that Bayern are financially stronger than any other club and will make the right conclusions from this season. Next year they will be right at the top again when the title is awarded,” Watzke stated.
Is he saying that Bayern can no longer dominate while simultaneously saying that they will continue to dominate from next year? Either way, it is quite entertaining to know that Bayern lives in Watzke’s head rent free despite his team playing the Champions League final.
