Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel has been growing as a player at Bayern Munich, having joined the club with just 27 minutes of experience in Europe’s top 5 leagues but growing to be an important super sub off the bench in the two season since with multiple extremely important late, game deciding contributions. This growth, however, has not been rewarded with a significant role with France or even the nation’s youth teams. Which is one of the reasons as to why Mathys Tel’s spot in the provisional squad for the Olympics is such a big deal, as announced by France’s official twitter account.
Thierry Henry, manager of France’s U-21 side and subsequently manager at the Olympics, offered a short quote to RMCSport, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, about Mathys Tel’s inclusion: “I’ve had discussions with Bayern, yes. They told me Mathys can come.”
Given the tournament’s length and start date, Tel looks set to miss weeks of the new season’s preparation and multiple friendlies against Düren and Tottenham Hotspur under new coach Vincent Kompany. Could this hurt the former Stade Rennes player’s chance to play a more important role in this upcoming season? It certainly will not help his chances.
On a side note, Bayern youth player Adam Aznou looks set to join Mathys Tel at the Olympics as he makes the preliminary squad for Morocco. Hopefully both of them will come back better players for the experience.
