After beating Poland on Friday in Germany, the two women’s teams played again on Tuesday — this time in Poland. As is common, Bayern Munich was well represented in the national team’s roster — including incoming transfer Lena Oberdorf wearing the captain’s armband in her 50th appearance for Germany. Bayern loanee Natalia Padilla also started for Poland.
Not unlike Friday — where Padilla scored for Poland in the first minute — Poland went ahead in the 12th minute. Germany was unable to equalize in the first half, but the half was still unfortunately eventful. In the 38th minute, Oberdorf was fouled and could not remain on the pitch. In tears, she was carried to the locker room. Her status for next month’s Olympics may be in peril.
Bayern Munich’s Lea Schüller finally got Germany on the board in the 51st minute. She broke the deadlock in the 69th minute with a goal that was all Bayern. Sydney Lohman passed it to Giulia Gwinn who passed to Schüller who finished with the second goal — netting the winner for the second straight match. Bayern’s Klara Bühl finished off the scoring with a goal in the 77th minute.
The win clinches qualification for next summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 for Germany with two matches left. Before the Olympics, Germany will play in Iceland and then against Austria in Germany. Both teams have a chance for second place and automatic qualification.
