BFW Postseason Breakdown: Bayern Munich’s Best Midfielder
This category, well, it might stir some debate…
Chuck: I did not think Joshua Kimmich or Leon Goretzka were as horrible as many of you (dodges a tomato) and Konrad Laimer rebounded from a rough start, but you would be hard-pressed to find a better midfielder than Aleksandar Pavlović, who was just sensational in every way. Even an injury and an extended bout with an illness could not derail him. Admittedly, this was a very close battle with Goretzka, whose versatility was massive throughout the season. Selection: Aleksandar Pavlović.
zippy: This is Leon Goretzka for me. Doubted, it seemed, from beginning to end, the veteran persevered and delivered in a variety of roles and personnel groupings. Bayern played some of its best football this season with Goretzka in that more defensive but still free-wheeling role, where he covered for the left-back. Six goals, seven assists — he also had one of his better Bundesliga seasons in attacking statistics. Tough year to miss out on the EUROs, so we gotta show him some deserved love. Selection: Leon Goretzka.
Frank: It is absolutely unbelievable how quickly Aleksandar Pavlović adjusted to professional football, the Bundesliga and even the Champions League. He made the jump from playing against 18-year-olds to playing against the likes of Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos and Aurelién Tchouameni seem simple. Beyond just the unbelievable ease in his step up to the first team, Pavlović immediately showed up his senior counterparts in his ease in possession, demonstrating the kind of precise passing quality and ease in decision making that the others simply do not have. Aleks was not even Bayern’s highest rated midfield prospect in the Bayern campus last season and all of a sudden he is the building block Bayern wants to build the midfielder around. Unbelievable. Selection: Aleksandar Pavlović.
LoneStar249: After arriving on a free transfer, I was pretty convinced that Konrad Laimer’s campaign would mimic Marcel Sabitzer’s two-year dry spell at Bayern. Instead, Laimer earned 18 starts and 1,772 minutes during the Bundesliga season. Laimer’s ferocity and leadership invigorated the rest of the squad to make a late season push that barely fell short of the Champions League final. Selection: Konrad Laimer.
RIPLT: This is a toss-up between Laimer and Pavlović, but I’m going for Laimer on this one. Pavlović was good last season and showed why, but the sample size felt a bit too small; he burst onto the scene. Laimer was different because he completely changed everyone’s perception on him. Selection: Konrad Laimer.
