Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich is a guy who might want to be something he is not — at least to some folks.
Kimmich is Germany’s first-choice right-back for the EURO 2024 competition, but it seems like he still looks longingly at the central midfield position next to Toni Kroos, which seems like it will be filled by Bayern Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich.
“As far as I’m concerned, I love playing in both positions, both as a right-back and in midfield. I think Robert has done very well, especially in the last few games. He complemented Toni very well. With Robert, it’s not just that he can fight and win duels, he also has qualities on the ball, which we sometimes underestimate. He has many qualities that can help us,” said Kimmich (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “As a right-back, the requirements are different than in midfield. I’ve played that position before, so I quickly got used to it again. Of course, you have different routines and try to prepare yourself as best as possible. My position has changed, but I still want to lead the way with good performances.”
Kimmich seems like he is bringing the right attitude to his personal conundrum. The 29-year-old is absolutely needed at right-back for this tourney, but maybe in the future he will get that return to the midfield that it seems like he would like.
