Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich and the German Bundesliga has so far resulted in no trophies — meaning the English striker’s hunt for silverware now turns to EURO 2024. However, a 0-1 loss to Iceland in the final friendly means England, like Germany, will be heading into the tournament with more questions than answers.
England coach Gareth Southgate made big calls with his final cuts for the tournament squad, leaving out the likes of Manchester City attacker Jack Grealish, Tottenham midfielder James Madison, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
But while Southgate promised a “different” England side, the loss to Iceland is more reminiscent of 2016 — when Iceland bounced England in the round of 16 — than 2021, when England beat Germany en route to the Final.
Kane for his part played a decent game, but managed just two shots (zero on target, one blocked) in 64 minutes
Expectations are sky high for the English as always. But the Germans are not alone in heading into EURO 2024 on shaky footing.
