Alexander Nübel is on loan with VfB Stuttgart from Bayern Munich and turned in a terrific 2023/24 campaign. However, that did not matter much in the national team setting as the goalkeeper was dropped last week.
German national team manager Julian Nagelsmann detailed the situation and why he opted to leave Nübel home for the EUROs.
“The decision has nothing to do with Alex’s performance. He has integrated very well into the group and has done well in training. In the end, we have a few uncertainties with Leroy (Sané), where we don’t know how much strain he can tolerate. The goalkeeping position has the advantage that if someone gets injured, you can nominate a replacement at any time. That’s not the case with outfield players. That’s why we prefer to have one more outfield player with a view to Leroy, who is currently nearing 100%,” Nagelsmann told RTL (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
If Nübel continues his upward trajectory, he could find himself on the roster for a big international tourney soon enough.
