When Bayern Munich approached Julian Nagelsmann for a potential return to club football, the 36-year-old turned them down, instead opting to extend his contract with the DFB. Nagelsmann is now set to coach Germany in front of home audiences at EURO 2024 — an attractive job for any manager.
According to a report by Bild, Nagelsmann is being well-compensated for his work. The coach will earn a fixed salary of €6m per year along with a bonus of €400k should Germany win the EUROs. This is a fraction of what he could have earned as a club football manager, and less than half of what he reportedly earned at Bayern Munich before his sacking — still, a sweet deal given the relatively lower tempo of national team football.
However, the DFB did insert an interesting clause into the contract. Should Germany fail to exit the group stage, the contract extension becomes void — effectively, the DFB could sack Nagelsmann immediately without severance pay. It seems that repeated group stage exits at the World Cup have left the people in charge of the German national team wary of any coach no matter their pedigree — Hansi Flick, after all, won a sextuple at Bayern Munich before taking over the job.
So Julian Nagelsmann will need results to justify his continued stay at the helm of the national team. Say Germany do immolate at the Euros — who should the DFB pick to take over the national team? Thomas Tuchel is apparently available…
