Update — June 13th, 7:25AM EDT: Terzić is out!
Borussia Dortmund made it official, Edin Terzić has left the club. BVB issued a full statement on its website:
Borussia Dortmund and coach Edin Terzic are going their separate ways. The 41-year-old, who won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2021, finished runner-up in 2023 and reached the Champions League final in 2024, asked BVB to terminate his contract immediately. Borussia Dortmund agreed to the request after a joint discussion.
Edin Terzic emphasised in a personal message: “Dear Borussia fans, even though it hurts me terribly right now, I would like to tell you that I will be leaving BVB today. It was a huge honour to be able to lead this great club to a DFB Cup victory and most recently to a Champions League final. I asked those responsible for a meeting after our final at Wembley because after nine years at BVB, including six years on the coaching team and two and a half years as head coach, I feel that the upcoming new start should be accompanied by a new man on the sidelines. Everyone who knows me knows that during this decision-making process of the past few weeks, two hearts have been beating in my chest. But even after intensive discussions, my basic feeling has not changed. I wish Borussia Dortmund only the very best and say thank you and goodbye.”
Borussia Dortmund’s CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke, emphasises: “Edin Terzic has done outstanding work during his time at BVB. We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Edin and I will always remain friends.”
“I have worked with Edin Terzic for a long time and in a spirit of trust during his time as youth coach, as technical director and most recently as head coach. In all positions, it was a privilege for him to be able to work for this club. Many conversations in recent days have once again highlighted this love and passion for BVB. Edin will always be a Borussia fan and part of the BVB family,” says Borussia Dortmund’s sports director, Lars Ricken.
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl emphasises: “Edin is a Borussia fan through and through, a great, very authentic person and has always given 100 percent to BVB. We have experienced a lot together. It was great fun working with Edin on our goals. Our successes of the past years will always be linked to him – and I am sure that we will see each other again. Edin will follow his own path.”
Apparently bothered by Bayern Munich’s desire — and propensity — to create unnecessary turmoil within the club, Borussia Dortmund is attempting to one-up the Bavarians.
According to a report from Sky Sport journalist Patrick Berger, BVB head coach Edin Terzić offered his resignation to the club on Wednesday night. The move comes after Terzić guided Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League finale against Real Madrid. BVB would go on to lose that match:
