Lothar Matthäus sometimes has highly controversial opinions about Bayern Munich but he might be right about Joshua Kimmich. When asked if Kimmich should move abroad, Matthäus mentioned the following according to @CMoffiziell via @iMiaSanMia:
Lothar Matthäus on whether Joshua Kimmich should consider moving abroad: “No, he should stay here. Kimmich has to come to terms with it if the coach wants to play him at right-back, because he can be world-class there too. Here is the former Bayern midfielder’s quote in full:
“No, he should stay here. Kimmich has to come to terms with it if the coach wants to play him at right-back, because he can be world-class there too. Sometimes it’s bad luck for a player to be world-class in two positions. Kimmich is a team player. He has character and that’s why he will do his best in the national team and also at FC Bayern if his coach wants him to play on the right side.”
Matthäus’ assessment is indeed correct; Kimmich is both a good midfielder and a defender. Bayern would do well to remember that players as flexible and as talented as Kimmich are not exactly available for cheap in Europe. Matthäus mentions that Kimmich should stay but does Vincent Kompany, a defender who never won a UEFA Champions League medal unlike Kimmich, want him to?
