The transfer rumors are in full swing at Bayern Munich. The club has already made a surprise signing in Hiroki Ito from VfB Stuttgart, but the club’s backline could yet see more movement before the close of the summer transfer window.
Matthijs de Ligt is heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in what would be a reunion with Erik ten Hag after the two worked together at Ajax earlier on in their respective careers. Elsewhere at center-back, Dayot Upamecano refused to confidently say “no” when he was asked about whether or not he will be leaving Bayern this summer or not. “We’ll see, we’ll see,” the French international had replied when he was asked whether or not he could envision leaving the Rekordmeister during the summer window, adding that there will certainly be discussions after the EUROs. For now, he is just focused on the tournament with France.
Upamecano was not high on Thomas Tuchel’s pecking order, as the German manager’s preferred starting pair at center back was De Ligt and Eric Dier, but new manager Vincent Kompany is said to have a great deal of trust in the Frenchmen. Despite this, information from Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) is heavily suggesting that the 25-year-old is preferring a move to the Premier League in England.
Having been brought in by Julian Nagelsmann the same summer the manager joined Bayern from RB Leipzig from the same club, Upamecano has had to adjust to life under two different managers after the club controversially parted ways with the now-Germany boss. Simply put, it has not exactly worked out as he would have like it to, and after three seasons with Bayern, it could be time for the center back to start a fresh challenge abroad, at least in his estimation.
Even with Ito in, there could be more of a possibility with De Ligt potentially leaving the club for minutes for Upamecano, but that is not changing his wanting to ponder a potential move away to England’s top flight. Only time will tell what winds up happening between now and the end of August, but all signs are positioning towards Upamecano wanting to leave Bayern.
