Bayern Munich’s dramatic fall from grace during the 2023/24 season caught many observers by surprise, including former German national team player Robert Huth.
Speaking to Betway, Huth said that Bayer Leverkusen was just too good.
“I think you always expect Bayern to compete for the title, but you have to say that Leverkusen were just too good. They didn’t stop winning and you can criticize the bigger clubs when they don’t go toe-to-toe, but sometimes you just have to admit that another team was better,” Huth said. “And not just for six months, but twelve or 18 months since Alonso took over – that’s just fantastic. You just have to take your hat off and admit that you are sometimes outplayed by a better team.
“Bayern Munich are of course used to being the best team in the country and the newspapers love to make a big story out of it when things don’t go their way, but Leverkusen were simply stronger and more consistent. You saw that when they played Bayern. They played really well and deserved to win. As surprising as it is that Leverkusen managed that, it’s a great achievement for them to play through a season like that to the end.”
Huth also thinks that Bayern Munich should have kept Thomas Tuchel, but that is all water under the bridge at this point.
“Bayern know they had a proven winner as coach. I know Tuchel can be a bit difficult at times, as he has been in the past with Dortmund and Chelsea, but do Bayern want someone they can get on well with or do they want someone who can bring titles to Munich? Personally, I would have kept Tuchel and stuck with him,” Huth stated. “I want coaches to prove themselves a bit longer before they get a chance at a big club.”
